"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: The sender also wants to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several famous fans have openly coveted the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos frequently show them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage people to start a band."

Award Milestone

The band are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics follow departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound resilience required a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's honesty shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

But Haim will forever be their top priority.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
