The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being declared a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
